"Free as in Freedom, Free as in Price"

Welcome to the website of Piga Software, we are a group of programmers dedicated to the creation of software for the GNU/Linux™ platform that is free software (copyleft) under the GNU General Public Licence (GPL) version 3.0. We are particularly interested in developing computer games, especially historical games, story-based games, first person shooters, and strategy games. If you wish to participate in any of our projects or wish to suggest a new one, post it on our discussion forum.

When we use the word "free" we mean freedom and not price, although you still don't have to pay anything for our software. Our free software grants you the freedom to use, study, modify and redistribute our software in any way. There is only one exception, the software has to remain free, it has to always be re-released under the GPL, including all public modifications.

Key Projects

Free Empires Source Code Screenshot
Free Empires is our star project. Its goal is write a free software reversed engineered equivalent of Microsoft™ and Ensemble Studios™': Age of Empires, that works on GNU/Linux, with some interest in porting it to Microsoft Windows™. Two Source Releases (SRs) are available however the upcoming SR 3.0 is going to be the grandest yet: called the "engine release" it is going to have the strongest engine built for the project. Download Free Empires: Chief and Warriors SR 2.0 Tested on Fedora 7, 8, 9. SR 1.0 tested on Fedora "Core" versions 4 and 7 as well as Ubuntu 7.04.
Donut Quest Screenshot
Donut Quest is a game we produced under the request of the Brogo web comic strip, play as the Brogo character Ed Donut as he battles spiders and eats donuts in a dilapidated factory due for demolition. Graphics, sounds, and music courtesy of Malcolm Wilson Multimedia. Donut Quest works on Microsoft Windows 95 and above but has not been tested on Windows Vista. Donut Quest has been ran in WINE under Fedora 7, 8, 9 and worked perfectly besides not playing the MIDI music files. We are now working on Donut Quest version 1.5 which will fix bugs, add features, and help those WINEing it, as well as upgrading it to the GPL 3.0. Download Version 1.0.0 Here!
PigaVision
PigaVision is a free software utility for using the television out ports of video cards. It functions as a front-end interface for the XRandR and Xvattr applications. In this way, PigaVision allows you to use your TV-out with one central application. PigaVision's main feature is that it allows you to set your screen resolution and activate your television out port accordingly. It also has settings for playing video files on either your television or computer, and a area that allows users to change their Gamma settings. All actions can be seen in greater depth from the Terminal Output tab, and help documentation is available from the Help and About tab of the program. Download Version 1.2.0 Here!
Piga's Pumpkin Carving
Piga's Pumpkin Carving is a small program in which the user can carve a virtual Halloween Jack-O-Lantern written by Graham L. Wilson. It was first built for Microsoft Windows in Game Maker 6.1, and that version is to be eventually released as part of the Piga Windows Entertainment Pack. Development of a GNU/Linux port began on October 27, 2008 and it was released on October 31, 2008 (Halloween). The program starts with a bare pumpkin, the player may then add six different drawing objects, and design their own Jack-O-Lanterns. Download Version 1.0.0 Here!
Alexei: Part IX
Alexei: Part IX is a free software graphical adventure game released by Piga Software on May 19, 2009. It is the first Piga Software program to use the Gambas Adventure Engine and also the first Piga Software game released for GNU/Linux and other POSIX systems. You take the role of Alexei Volkov, master criminal, who is intent on robbing the house of a cruel and ruthless businessman. After gaining access to the main hall with the help of a disgruntled servant, Alexei must search out the mansion in search of the owners vault. The game takes heavy inspiration from the Arthur Yahtzee Trilogy, and many aspects of the games design and interface are modeled after it. Download Version 1.2.0 Here!

Source Releases and Compiled Releases

In projects such as Free Empires, Piga organizes its releases into two categories: Source Releases (SR) and Compiled Releases (CR). Source Releases are just the bare GAMBAS project file compressed into a tar.gz file. Compiled Releases are finished programs, and come as standalone executables, Fedora RPMs, Mandriva RPMs, Suse RPMs, and Debian DEBs (all requiring the Gambas Run-Time Environment. Note: we are having trouble building the DEB files).

Piga Software's GNU/Linux source code can come in the form of a GAMBAS Project File, GAMBAS Forms, GAMBAS Classes, PNGs, TXT, and Ogg Vorbis files.

Tools of a Piga Software Programmer

1. GAMBAS: is a free software BASIC development tool similar to Visual Basic™, it is used for Piga Software's GNU/Linux development.
2. Game Maker: is a proprietary game development tool and is used for Piga Software's marginal Microsoft Windows development.
3. Bluefish: used to make the Piga Software website as well as other Piga Software websites.
4. Audacity: audio development and Ogg Vorbis conversions.
5. Mozilla Firefox™/Epiphany/Konquerer: web browsing.
6. OpenOffice.org: word processing and general productivity suite work.
7. Fedora GNU/Linux: operating system of choice.
8. Iced Tea: caffeine shot.
9. Noodle Soup/Sun Flower Seeds: hacker fuel.

Note: As Game Maker is proprietary it requires the full version of it to fully modify project files, Piga however offers a service that allows developers who modify Piga created Game Maker projects to send us their modified versions so that we can compile it for them. Request for this service on our forum, only modified Piga projects are applicable for this service.
